Leaking fluid leads officers to suspect
By Glenn Evans
Staff Writer
MARSHALL - A Hallsville man remained jailed Monday after an officer trailed leaking
fluid from the scene of a fatal hit-and-run accident to a suspect Sunday night.
Roger Dale Carney, 39, of Uncertain had been walking on the south side of U.S.
80 between Hallsville and Longview when he was struck by an east-bound vehicle and killed,
Department of Public Safety Trooper Odie Hitt said. The fatality occurred at 8:49 p.m.Sunday,
adjacent to the Del Monte Place subdivision entrance, according to a report. Hitt's report
said an east-bound 1992 Chevrolet pickup had swerved into the right shoulder and struck
the pedestrian before continuing on its way. Hitt said Monday he had followed a trail
of leaking fluid to a suspect, who was at his mother's house. Ray Dale Hooks, 34, of
Hallsville remained Monday in the Harrison County Jail under $31,000 in bonds set by
Justice of the Peace Sadie Clay. The judge charged Hooks with intoxication manslaughter,
with a $20,000 bond; failure to stop and render aid, carrying a $10,000 bond; and driving
while license suspended, with a $1,000 bond. Services for Carney, a manager at Ward Plaza
Apartments, are pending at Sullivan Family Funeral Home in Marshall.
Here at PADD we realize people don't say, "I think I will go get drunk and kill someone today!" But, how many times have you read an article like the one above? The members of PADD have read them and been a part of them and we don't want you to be on either end of that scenario. At some point we all have to recognize the fact that this can and does happen if you drink and drive.
The best way to stop drinking and driving is to think about how you would feel if a drunk driver ran over your brother, sister, CHILD, parent or friend. Take it from us, you would be angry, lost, broken, etc.. The thing that would make you the most angry is that it didn't have to happen. It's not like our loved one had a disease that didn't have a cure. We lost them because someone made a choice to drink and drive.
PADD members want to help those of you that still drink and drive to get off the fence and we want to support the people that have lost someone to this horrible crime. Yes, crime! When you get behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking you may as well have a loaded gun in your hand.
What can you do to help
stop drunk driving?
Even if you haven't been touched by drunk driving you can use one of our banners on your website to help get the word out. You can join the PADD webring too, if you have a page about how drunk driving has affected your life. If you have been touched by a drunk driving incident, you can add your quilt square to our memory quilt. If you would like to do a tribute page but don't know how to make one, contact us. There are a variety of ways that we can help or direct you.
You can talk to your family and friends about drinking and driving. Tell them you wouldn't want to see them behind bars after hurting or killing someone because they didn't call for a ride. This can sometimes make more of an impact than telling them you wouldn't want to see them hurt or killed. We feel that, more often than not, people that are drinking and driving don't care about themselves but would never really want to hurt someone else.
As long as it is legal to drink, people will use alcohol for many reasons. Some use it every day to drown their sorrows, others once a year on New Years Eve. No matter the reason, we have many links you can view that will give you ideas and help you find ways to get help for your friends and relatives that will need a ride.
